Analytical/Physical Chemistry

Grant is a dedicated senior scientist with a thirst for understanding the unknown.

He specializes in analytical and physical chemistry with academic and industry experience in the use of vibrational spectroscopy coupled with chemometrics/multivariate statistics for applications in the life sciences, biomedical diagnostics, and environmental science fields.

He has a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree and a Doctorate in Chemistry from Monash University, Melbourne Australia. During his Honours year, he was the winner at the Australian Conference of Vibrational Spectroscopy 2005 for the best paper presented.

His Ph.D. project focused on the applications of Resonance Raman and Fourier Transform Infrared microspectroscopy in malaria research, which resulted in the publication of six high impact journal articles. In 2010 he received a Certificate of Commendation from the Australian Synchrotron for the quality of his thesis and his research resulted in the commercialization of a portable infrared diagnostic device for the early detection of malaria, which is currently being used in remote areas in South East Asia.

He has over ten years of combined experience as a postdoctoral scientist in academia and industry, which has developed his skills in writing and communicating complex scientific discoveries to a broad audience. His experience in delivering products to the market has given him exposure to the patent process and the importance of imagining and protecting innovations.

As a Chief Scientist in industry, he led a team to develop a portable infrared field instrument for the rapid detection of contaminants in soil, which is currently being sold in the petrochemical industry. He and his team received the Barry Inglis Medal in 2016 from the National Measurement Institute for the innovation of the infrared field instrument to detect levels of petroleum hydrocarbons in soil.

Grant’s passion for high impact research and translating them into commercial outcomes has given him a broader view of the scientific landscape. He endeavors to transfer knowledge from a wide range of scientific disciplines to the community.
