MRes Biomedical Research, BSc Biological Sciences

Christy is passionate about communicating science to a wide range of audiences- from the general public to researchers in various fields. She has a BSc in Biological Sciences and is now an MRes student in Biomedical Research Bacterial Pathogenesis and Infection stream at Imperial College London. She has a great interest in tackling the problem of antimicrobial resistance and in translating pre-clinical research into therapeutic solutions.

When she was five, Christy was quarantined during the SARS outbreak in Hong Kong. This kindled her interest in science and made her want to understand the vitality and fatality of Nature’s creations. She has always been intrigued by the interaction between microbials and the host immune system. This has led her to pursue a bachelor’s degree in biology and further her studies by doing a master’s in research.

Christy focused on investigating the effect of an RNA repair system on antibiotic resistance in bacteria in her BSc final year project. She has learned a wide range of experimental techniques as well as skills in thesis-writing and viva oral exams. In one of her master’s rotation projects, she has worked on Enterohaemorrhagic E. coli, a human gut pathogen, and characterized the way this pathogen causes an unknown type of cell death. She has presented her work in regular group meetings and in front of the whole department. She particularly enjoys discussing the most recent findings with colleagues in her field.

During her studies, Christy is a laboratory teaching assistant for first-year medical students. She enjoys inspiring students to ponder on the principles behind each experimental procedure and communicating scientific facts and the logic of experimental designs. Moreover, she is also the academic representative representing students in her course and reflecting their opinions to academic staff.

Christy enjoys learning new knowledge, the challenge of processing the knowledge and communicating them effectively with each article commission. Outside of her work as a freelance scientific writer, she is based in London and is the leader of Imperial’s Hip Hop dance team.
